Question Corner

On this blog there's a new page; question corner.

There, you may leave a comment(s) asking anything hobby (well - not airbrush stuff)
And wI ill give a reply on the page, hopefully giving all the information you need.

As some of you may have noticed, my previous post was in response to a question on inks in the comments; if I feel there's a lot to say about the topic, it may make it to being a full blog post.

Remember, the only stupid question is the one that's never asked :p

  1. Here's a good one in my opinion, Do you only use GW paints? or do you use less expensive paints like the ones you can find in general hobby stores like (Michaels, Joannes, Hobby Lobby, I don't know any of the british ones sry). Also would you ever use Vallejo or any of the other army paints.
I ask because for ME, its a question of price vs. quantity

  2. I do use mostly Games Workshop paints - they are good even if they are expensive. Although I have also tried Vallejo; their aluminium colour was particularly good, whilst their Model air White was different, more coats needed but a smoother result than other white paints i’ve tried.

Tamiya are a fair bit cheaper than GW, the paints of theirs i really like is mixing tamiya clear red with tamiya smoke, to get awesome shiny blood effects - beats GW’s Blood For The Blood God in my opinion.

For paint additives, e.g. flow improver and glaze medium, i use liquitex, Windsor and Newton, and GW’s Lahmean medium.

For brushes i use all different, Winsor and Newton, Daler Rowley, Games Workshop and a couple of other makes too. Windsor and Newton are the best for those uber-fine detail brushes you use for eyes, whilst for larger areas, blending, and base coating I tend to use Daler Rowley.

Above is just what i use, you could try that set up, but whats available to you, and what you find good to work with is likely to be different.
Over all i’d say try out different companies, if you can do just as well with any cheaper company, go for it; but in some cases you really do just get what you pay for.

  3. Hey man, I was wondering if you have a good way to make a small, compact painting station... Me and Jayden from Imperial Patrol were thinking why not to modify an old suitcase, and I was wanting your thoughts

  4. Okay, seems I am the only one that asks you anything, but I have another question: How would you go about creating the effect that a model was branded. As in what they used to do with cattle, hot needle to the plastic? AI ask cuz my Scottish pioneers are gonna be made from chaos marauders and I think it would be neat if they had the Imperial Aquila (or similar) branded into their chests

  5. I don't really have a way for the compact paint station, i tend to sprawl my painting paraphernalia all across a table.

As for the branding, i personally wouldn't advise attempt to sculpt / carve it into the model unless you're really confident at that sort of thing. I'd be more confident painting it, although i don't have any examples of branding in my own work. An 'eavy metal tutorial on tattoo painting I found, uses a Chaos Marauder too. Just use Screamer Pink or Mephiston Red instead of Regal Blue; and Pink Horror instead of Bleached Bone.

    1. Thanks fro the link, really helped out... Basically paint the thing completely (Obvious since you go from deepest out) go at it like actual tatooists and sketch first and then go for it. I kinda wich I could just stamp the Aquila since it is rather complex to do finely.

  6. Hey Oliver, got another fun question for you, hoping u could include a tutorial: How would you go about painting horses?
I ask because a friend of mine is shipping me a bunch of French hussars I aim to turn into rough riders somehow, and I haven't the slightest idea on how to paint a horse...
